Google Cloud Certification Path: Cloud Digital Leader, Associate Cloud Engineer or Professional Cloud Architect?

Google Cloud is the third major public cloud alongside AWS and Azure, and it is particularly strong in data analytics, machine learning and Kubernetes. Its certification programme is smaller and simpler than AWS’s, which makes planning easier. This guide walks through the three levels, compares the most popular exams, and suggests a sensible order.

Fees, formats and validity periods were checked on Google Cloud’s official certification pages in October 2026. Fees are in US dollars and applicable taxes are added at checkout.

The three levels

  • Foundational: Cloud Digital Leader and Generative AI Leader. No technical prerequisites. Aimed at people who work alongside technical teams.
  • Associate: Associate Cloud Engineer, Associate Google Workspace Administrator and Associate Data Practitioner. For people who deploy and maintain cloud projects.
  • Professional: role-based exams including Cloud Architect, Cloud Developer, Data Engineer, Cloud DevOps Engineer, Cloud Security Engineer, Cloud Network Engineer, Cloud Database Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer and Security Operations Engineer. Google has also launched an Agentic Architect certification in beta.

As with AWS, none of these exams has a formal prerequisite. You can sit a Professional exam without the Associate one, though the recommended experience rises at each level.

Cloud Digital Leader: for business and non-technical roles

Cloud Digital Leader tests whether you can explain how Google Cloud helps organisations: digital transformation, data and AI capabilities, infrastructure modernisation, security and operations. It does not test configuration skills.

It suits pre-sales consultants, account managers, project managers, business analysts and leaders in companies adopting Google Cloud. For engineers, it adds little that the Associate exam does not already cover.

Associate Cloud Engineer: the best first exam for engineers

Associate Cloud Engineer (ACE) is the hands-on starting point. It covers setting up a cloud environment, planning and implementing solutions, keeping them running, and configuring access and security. Expect questions on Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Cloud Run, Cloud Storage, VPC networking, IAM and the gcloud command-line tool.

Google recommends six months of hands-on experience. New Google Cloud accounts come with free trial credits, which are enough to practise most of the syllabus if you delete resources when you finish each lab.

Professional Cloud Architect: the most recognised Google Cloud credential

Professional Cloud Architect is Google Cloud’s flagship exam. It tests whether you can design secure, scalable and reliable solutions to meet business requirements. A distinctive feature is the case studies: Google publishes several fictional company scenarios in advance, and 20–30% of the exam asks questions about two of them. Reading the published case studies carefully before the exam is essential.

Note that Professional certifications are valid for two years, not three. Google offers a shorter renewal exam, and for Cloud Architect also a renewal route through designated learning on Google’s training platform in the final year of validity.

Recommended paths

  • Infrastructure or cloud engineer: Associate Cloud Engineer → Professional Cloud Architect → Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer or Cloud Network Engineer.
  • Data professional: Associate Data Practitioner → Professional Data Engineer.
  • Developer: Associate Cloud Engineer → Professional Cloud Developer.
  • Security professional: Associate Cloud Engineer → Professional Cloud Security Engineer or Security Operations Engineer.
  • Non-technical role: Cloud Digital Leader, and Generative AI Leader if your work involves AI adoption.

Should you choose Google Cloud over AWS or Azure?

In India, AWS and Azure appear in more job listings overall, so they are the safer first choice for most people. Google Cloud is a strong choice if you work in data engineering, analytics or machine learning, if your employer or its clients already use Google Cloud, or if you want to stand out with a less common credential alongside AWS or Azure. Many skills (networking, IAM, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code) transfer between clouds, so a second cloud certification comes much faster than the first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take Professional Cloud Architect without Associate Cloud Engineer?

Yes. There are no prerequisites. Experienced engineers often go straight to the Professional exam, but ACE is a good stepping stone if you are new to Google Cloud.

Why is the Professional certification valid for only two years?

Google sets a shorter validity for Professional certifications because the design best practices they test change quickly. Renewal options are cheaper and shorter than the original exam.
