Almost every company wants dashboards. That makes business intelligence (BI) one of the quickest skills to add to your profile, whether you are in finance, HR, sales operations, supply chain or IT. The two leading tools are Microsoft Power BI and Tableau (owned by Salesforce).
Power BI or Tableau?
| Power BI | Tableau | |
|---|---|---|
| Job postings in India | Generally more, given the wide use of Microsoft 365 and Fabric | Strong in analytics-heavy firms, consulting and Salesforce shops |
| Learning cost | Power BI Desktop is free; Microsoft Learn is free | Tableau Public is free; Tableau has free training videos |
| Main certification | Microsoft PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) | Tableau Certified Data Analyst and related credentials |
| Ecosystem | Excel, Microsoft Fabric, Azure | Salesforce and data cloud integrations |
Default advice: start with Power BI unless your target employers clearly use Tableau. The concepts transfer, and many analysts eventually learn both.
Do you need a paid course?
- Free: Microsoft Learn’s PL-300 learning path plus its free practice assessment covers the exam well.
- Low-cost: a well-rated Udemy course on DAX and data modelling adds depth. DAX is where most learners struggle.
- Expensive: “data analyst” programmes costing lakhs bundle Excel, SQL, Python and BI. They are only worth it if you need heavy hand-holding. Check their outcomes carefully.
What actually gets you hired
- SQL. Most BI roles test it.
- Data modelling, such as star schemas, and solid DAX or calculated fields.
- Two or three portfolio dashboards on realistic data. Examples include a sales dashboard, an HR attrition analysis, or a financial P&L using public Indian datasets from data.gov.in or RBI. Publish them on Tableau Public or as Power BI screenshots with a short write-up.
- Storytelling. Explain what decision the dashboard supports.
- The certification (PL-300) as a credibility boost, especially for career switchers.
