SAP skills remain in strong demand in India, where large numbers of consultants work on SAP projects for Indian and global clients. SAP certification is one way to prove your knowledge, but the way SAP sells and maintains certifications has changed over the years. This guide explains how it works today.

How you buy an SAP exam
SAP certification exams are bought as a subscription to the SAP Certification Hub. The standard one-attempt product (CER001) is listed at US$236. It gives you 12 months of access to the Certification Hub, during which you can schedule one exam attempt. SAP also sells a six-attempt product (CER006) and a discounted one-attempt product for students (CERS01).
Exams are remotely proctored through your webcam, and you can schedule them at any time through the Certification Hub. Many SAP partners and employers provide Certification Hub access, so ask before you buy.
Staying certified
SAP releases new software versions regularly, and its certifications follow those releases. SAP links staying current to its learning subscription: with an SAP Learning Hub subscription you can take the assessments that keep your certification valid. Read the current “stay certified” rules on SAP’s website for the certification you hold, because the details depend on the product and release.
Associate, Specialist and Professional levels
- Associate: the foundation level for a solution area, such as financial accounting or sourcing and procurement in SAP S/4HANA. Most people start here.
- Specialist: focuses on a narrower topic and often requires an Associate certification first.
- Professional: for experienced consultants, requiring deep project experience.
Choosing a module
The best SAP certification is the one that matches your background, because SAP consultants are valued for combining system knowledge with business knowledge.
| Area (traditional name) | Good fit for |
|---|---|
| Finance and Controlling (FICO) | Commerce graduates, accountants, CAs and finance professionals |
| Materials Management (MM) / Sourcing and Procurement | Purchase, supply chain and stores professionals |
| Sales and Distribution (SD) | Sales operations, order management and logistics staff |
| Production Planning (PP) | Engineers and production planners from manufacturing |
| SuccessFactors (HR) | HR and payroll professionals |
| ABAP and SAP BTP development | Programmers and computer science graduates |
| SAP Basis / technology | System administrators and infrastructure engineers |
Does certification get you an SAP job?
On its own, rarely. Recruiters for SAP roles look for project experience first: implementations, support work, or migrations to SAP S/4HANA. Certification helps most when it is combined with domain experience (for example, a chartered accountant learning FICO) or when you already work in an SAP environment as a key user. Be cautious of training institutes that promise placement purely on the basis of a course; ask for verifiable placement records.
Preparation tips
- Use SAP’s free learning journeys on SAP Learning, which map to each certification.
- Get system access for practice; reading alone is not enough to understand configuration.
- Check the certification’s topic areas and weightings on its SAP page, and make sure your material matches the current release.
